    The direct relationship between the individual and the ability to restore one's body to its original state of health may never be fully understood. The fields of medicine and health are two primordial fields that affect the daily lives of all beings. Throughout history, various cultures have concocted their own methods of alternative medicine for treatment and therapy which nations today then rely on. In its infancy, medicine begins with the assimilation of ancient civilizations to the world around them and their beliefs about how things worked. Ancient Greek medicine may have started with spiritual beliefs, but Greek practitioners pointed the medical profession in the right direction for modern times. To fully understand Greek medicine, one must first strive to gain knowledge about how it all begins. “In Greek mythology, a demigod hero named Asclepius was conceived by Apollo, the god of music, healing and prophecy, and Coronis, a mortal princess. Asclepius' mother, Coronis, was unfaithful to Apollo. Apollo then killed her for her unfaithfulness to the god. She was placed on a funeral pyre so that her body could be cremated. As his body began to burn, Apollo felt grief for his unborn son and snatched the child Asclepius from his mother's corpse, saving him from death. The god then handed Asclepius over to the centaur Chiron who became his tutor and mentor in the art of healing” (Leadbetter). Asclepius later became the god of medicine and healing. “At Epidaurus his most famous sanctuary was established as well as throughout the Greek world. The cult of Asclepius became very popular during the 300s BCE and cult centers (known as Asclepieion) were used by priests to treat the sick.
