    Victorian Elements in “Porphyria's Lover” The Victorian period is between 1830 and 1901, this period is named after Queen Victoria; The longest reigning monarch of England. Britain was the most powerful nation in the world. This period was known for rather harsh morality. A huge change has taken place in England; factories polluted the air, cities exploded, feminism upended society, and Darwin's theory of evolution attacked long-held religious beliefs. The Victorians were proud of their achievements and optimistic about the future, but psychologically there was tension, doubt and anxiety as people struggled to understand and deal with the great changes they were experiencing. One of the authors known to have written during the Victorian period was Robert Browning. Robert Browning was a poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic monologues made him one of the Victorian poets. Robert died in December 1889. His poem "Porphyria's Lover" was published in 1836.
