  • Essay / Thematic Analysis of Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz

The major controversy in the story Anna in the Tropics describes the life and situations of a Cuban-American working in a cigar factory. Factory owners and employees spend time enjoying memories of their native Cuba and discussing good wares. Among the themes of the play are: tradition versus change; male point of view versus female point of view; nature; literature; acting; and of course, love. The title of the play alludes to its tragic outcome: the Anne of the title refers to the novel Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy where the romantic triangle of the classic Russian novel and the tragic end of the adulterous affair reappear in Anna in the Tropics. from the story I learned about Cheche, the half-brother of the cigar factory owner, who wants to take the position of reader in the factory and introduce machines into the hand-rolled cigar industry . Cheche has an engagement to Juan Julian, a newly arrived reader and considered one of the best readers in the region. Cheche once said, "Working here is like banging my head against a wall...I try to make changes...but it's like hitting a concrete wall every time I try to do something.” The reader was placed in factories to read stories, newspapers to workers while they worked. People claim that Juan is like hearing a bird sing when he reads. Ofelia, Santiago's wife and Marela and Conchita's mother, is responsible for bringing Juan Julian to Ybor City from Cuba, since she paid for his trip with her husband's money. She does not believe in restoring the factory, like Juan Julian, which leads to conflicts between her and Cheche. Juan Julian is a man who trusts in the corrective power of personality and he warns against...... middle of paper ......uan Julian it was his fault, he didn't gave his wife enough affection that she needs, so she cheats on Palomo with Juan Julian. Whatever the reason, life keeps moving forward. Works Cited Cruz, Nilo. Anna in the tropics. New York: Theater Communications Group, 2003.
