Essay / Argumentative Essay on Firebombing - 1290
If the United States had decided not to drop the bombs and pursue a ground invasion, then there would be a continuing cycle of D-Day invasions and there would be talk of a stalemate after several horrible battles. With the dropping of the atomic bombs, the Japanese surrendered unconditionally and declared they had lost the war. As previously stated, the Japanese fight to the death and would most likely win in a land invasion attempt. Some counterarguments might say that there are alternatives such as an island protest or that the United States should wait for help from the Russians. However, Japanese culture would have laughed at the United States if they saw them dropping the bomb on a desert island. Furthermore, the Russians had just left East Germany and had at least four months minimum to mobilize their military to Japan, while still having time to invade effectively. Additionally, the invasion would not have worked because of Japan's barbaric combat tactics. Additionally, the American economy was still in a severe depression. The United States had to end the war quickly so that the government could focus on effectively restoring the economy and escaping the depression. The dropping of the bomb led to a decrease in American casualties and a shortened service life.
