Google and the seven rules of innovationGoogle is a company known for its innovation. Whether it's the products they release or the organizational culture they've created, Google has shown the ability to think outside the box. The company has grown from a small startup started as a school project in Stanford to one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world. The spirit of innovation is one of the fundamental elements on which the business is built and emphasis is placed on ensuring that this element endures. Seven Rules of Innovation Davila, Epstein, and Shelton (2013) developed seven rules of innovation. The rules created by the authors are: 1) Exercise strong leadership on innovation decisions. 2) Integrate innovation into the core business mindset. 3) Align the quantity and type of innovation with the company's activities. 4) Manage the natural tension between creativity and value capture. 5) Neutralize organizational antibodies. 6) Recognize that the basic unit of innovation includes a network of people both within and across outside the company. 7) Create the right metrics and rewards for innovation. We will examine how Google appears to meet these metrics. Rule 1: Exercise strong leadership on innovation decisions Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, have made it a priority to emphasize the importance of original thinking for the company. According to former CEO Eric Schmidt (Hardy & Quentin, 2011), “leaders, especially founders, spent a lot of time emphasizing this, having original ideas: if you had an idea that was copied, you were ridiculed” (p. 3). With a focus on innovation from the top, Brin and Page made it clear that innovation...... middle of paper ... for the products they created. of Google's core values. By following Davila, Epstein, and Shelton's (2013) seven rules of innovation, they have a systematic and comprehensive approach to innovation. Because they have managed to maintain this culture of innovation while growing, this is the case. it is likely that Google will continue to be at the forefront of technological innovation.
