Comedy is by far the most influential factor in deciding whether or not a story is entertaining for its audience, due to its ability to create a more atmospheric relaxed and more pleasant. the environment in the plot. From the mischievous clumsiness of Anne Shirley to the witty banter of detectives Tommy and Tuppence, it's clear that comic characters have always been appreciated and recognized in literature. Sir Toby Belch is just one of many funny characters and is by far one of the most humorous. While Shakespeare's Twelfth Night revolves around a question of romantic entanglement, the very presence of Sir Toby is enough to lighten the mood and accentuate the comic theme of the story through his creation of trouble and his unique personality. Therefore, Sir Toby Belch is undeniably the most enjoyable character in the entire play. Certainly, one could argue that Sir Toby has a very irresponsible and apathetic nature, which can come across as an unappealing aspect of his character. As he returns home at unearthly hours without regard for his niece and makes no attempt to earn money to compensate for his generosity, it is clear that Sir Toby feels entitled to live on his estate simply by because of their blood connection. This depicts his callous personality as he has no sympathy for Olivia who has just lost her brother and father. Furthermore, it is clear that the only reason Sir Toby had befriended Sir Andrew was for his wealth and wanted him to marry Olivia for the same reason. “Why he has three thousand ducats a year” (I iii 20) Belch says with clear intentions and tainted virtue, once again illustrating his immoral conduct. He has the ability to divert attention to the funny parts of the play by creating confusion within the characters and reducing the intensity of the problem with unintelligible logic. However, the main reason why Sir Toby is able to be the most likeable character is his laughable personality. All of these aspects of SirToby Belch lead the audience to find him entertaining and amusing, as TwelfthNight is one of Shakespeare's funniest plays.
