With levels of homelessness rapidly increasing in the UK (Fitzpatrick et al., 2012), the need for a study analyzing the spatial needs of homeless people who suffer from drug addiction and are accommodated in night hostels/shelters was essential. The task of critical evaluation is first of all to summarize the research article A Qualitative Exploration of the Spatial Needs of Homeless Drug Users Living in Hostels and Night Shelters (2013), discuss the presented methodology. throughout it and consider in more detail whether it was appropriate for the topic. Towards the end, the research findings will be discussed and an assessment of whether or not the article is beneficial to the housing sector will be provided, along with possible recommendations. The subject of the aforementioned journal article is an exploration of a sub-category of homeless people, namely homeless drug users. The correlation between homelessness and drug abuse and the brutal impact each issue has on the other is explored throughout the article, reinforcing the need to address each separately in order to achieve a effective end result. After defining terms such as homelessness, drug use and night shelters, he goes on to present a seven-pronged categorization of spatial needs that do not appear to be fully met by homeless accommodation providers. It argues that, according to Fitzpatrick and LaGory (2000), every individual needs a sense of privacy, security, personal space and reasonable human interactions in order to maintain a healthy life and provides definitions of the concepts of privacy and personal space.
