Essay / DSM-5: AUTISM - 633
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Addition (DSM-5) identifies countless mental disorders, such as autism (“DSM-5 Development of American Psychiatric Association). According to a 2014 study, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Surveillance Network found that the prevalence of autism in the United States is "about 1 in 68 children." (“Prevalence”). This statistic reveals an increasing frequency of the disorder, since the prevalence just two years ago was 1 in 88, and thirty years ago the disorder was present in 1 in 10,000 (“Prevalence”). With such increasing rates of pervasiveness, it is in people's best interest to become familiar with this disorder. Autism can be diagnosed based on symptoms that can vary widely in severity. Most cases can be identified between 6 and 18 months of age, with notable disruptions in areas such as developmental rates and sequence of motor, social, and cognitive skills. Most symptoms are prevalent around age three, such as semantic and pragmatic delays (if the child even speaks), apparent repetitive actions, tiptoeing, and dissociation with the outside world. Pragmatic issues would concern basic social manners, such as taking turns, reciprocal interaction, etc. Semantic problems involve misunderstanding or misuse of vocabulary in which the child performs a false meaning of the word he or she is using with the intention of doing so. correct. Some examples would be a 6-18 month old child not responding to other people or fixating on objects, and older toddlers not responding to their names, avoiding eye contact or an unusual position in the middle of the paper. .....called Social Communication Disorder, which makes it possible to “diagnose social communication disorders without the presence of repetitive behaviors” (“DSM-5 Released: The Big Changes- World of Psychology”).
