Essay / The importance of community music - 927
The stories were difficult to discern based on which came first: being physically healthy to age well, or physically fit to enjoy playing music. These narratives reveal participants' musical identities, values, and beliefs about their commitment to fitness for community musical participation. The stories strongly suggest that there is a synergistic effect between health and music. That is, participants had to be healthy to participate in music, and the corollary was that music was the reason for being healthy. Participants who adapted to aging processes to continue playing music took naps during the day and changed their meal schedules for late-night concerts, sat down during long concerts, and modified their nutrition and exercise routines. Similarly, the accounts suggest that despite sensory adaptations to hearing, vision, and musculoskeletal symptoms, aging processes do not disrupt quality of life through participation in community music. Therefore, participants' narratives demonstrated their acceptance of the aging process and, when adaptations emerged, they chose appropriate actions to improve their condition. Yet, some accounts show that the personal benefits of physical well-being improved participants' musical skills, sustained youth, and maintenance of cognitive simulation. Overall, the stories demonstrated that physical fitness, healthy eating, and intellectual energy were personal benefits for performing.
