The two-hundred-million-euro complex opened in 1984 as Harrah's at Trump Plaza. Ironically, he bought Holiday Inn and the casino was renamed Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino ("Donald Trump"). “For Trump, every project had to be the best of its kind, and he usually combined keen instincts and perfect timing with ruthless negotiations” (Shepard 84). Despite all the success of his real estate business, by 1990 the real estate market fell dramatically. This drop reduced the value of Trump's real estate empire from an estimated two billion dollars to five hundred million! Trump had to rely on loans simply to keep his real estate holdings from collapsing. Despite all the criticism Trump received for his large loans, his real estate empire rebounded to be worth at least two and a half billion dollars by 1997.
