Essay / Theme from The Martian Chronicles - 775
In The Martian Chronicles, Ray Bradbury posits that becoming independent is presented as a courageous and meaningful choice to make, whether for happiness, a good cause, or a peaceful life. It is shown that not following the norm and becoming an independent individual can lead to exciting new achievements, compelling philosophies, or true happiness. In this science fiction novel, Bradbury explores this theme recurrently, most notably in "Silent Towns", "-And The Moon Be Still As Bright" and "The Martian". Written about the future, spanning from 1999 to 2026, The Martian Chronicles takes place on both Earth and Mars, telling the story of the colonization of different planets and the annihilation of all humans on Earth by the war. During the process of discovering these planets, human characteristics predominate, especially those concerning the great courage of independence and the bravery of individuality. In the column “Silent Towns,” Bradbury explores this theme of independence through Walter Gripp, the last man on Mars. . Gripp feels extremely alone on Mars until he realizes that there is one more woman left. Once he meets her, Gripp doesn't like her physical traits, but decides to give her a chance because she is his last chance at love. He realizes that her personality is as unattractive as her appearance, so he leaves her to find a place to live and is described as follows: "...He has lived there ever since, with two freezers full of food to last him a hundred years . .. And when from time to time, over the years, the telephone rings, he does not answer” (Bradbury 155-156). Even though Gripp doesn't want to be alone for the rest of his life, he decides it's a better choice than living with the horrible... middle of paper ... with something much less desirable because he had to comply. Throughout The Martian Chronicles, being an individual who acts unexpectedly can be a telling change. Although becoming independent can have negative effects like death or loneliness, the change is worth it in Gripp, Spender, and Martian's situations. Being independent in today's society can also lead to many discoveries. Scientists and artists find comfort when working alone, for example Albert Einstein or Claude Monet. Being an independent thinker can unleash your intelligence and creativity; for example, philosophers like Buddhist monks who find peace by minimizing their contact with other beings. Being an independent person can create accomplishments that will make you a better human being. Being an independent person can lead to a more interesting and enthusiastic life.
