To Cell or Not To Cell? The dangers of cell phones to the health and safety of any individual can be supported not only by opinions, but also by facts. Opinions and research vary widely on the negative aspects of cell phone use, although most would prefer the benefits over the negatives. Although most consumers enjoy the convenience and mobility of cell phones, the human body does not. Cell phones are devices that emit radio frequency electromagnetic waves commonly known as RF-EMW (Brossner, Davoudi, and Kuber 19). Signals are transmitted via these waves from cellular devices to large antennas and centralized base stations (19). Studies show that excessive use of cells for four or more hours per day can significantly affect male fertility (19). The male reproductive system is extremely sensitive and compartmentalized (19). Exposure to electromagnetic waves and currents may have some effect on sperm count and motility (19). This is due to the electrically active cellular nature of sperm (19). In times of disaster, the simple use of a cell phone has saved many lives, both in preparing for and recovering from a disaster (33). Ease of use has put a cell phone in almost every hand from age two to eighty. The convenience of being able to reach family in the event of a catastrophic event or immediately contact a child to change plans is immeasurable for most. The world is at our fingertips, but what is voluntary sacrifice? Is the good health of adults or children an easy trade-off for convenience? Research and studies will continue, opinions will be expressed and scientists will debate the question of the future of humanity: cellular or not? Even though most consumers like the convenience and mobility of cell phones, the human body won't like it..
