Essay / Themes Used in the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet
The theme of the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is entertainment. This is proven in the play through the use of comedy, drama, romance and conflict. This style brought people of all ages, mentalities, and social classes to see the play because it used a mixture instead of just one genre of entertainment. The result was that Romeo and Juliet was highly entertaining, profitable, and generally successful in its goal. The use of comedy was usually through sexual puns and double entenders like "That's right, and therefore women, being the weaker vessels, are always pushed to the wall." Therefore I will push Montague's men from the wall and push his maids against the wall” (1.1.15-18) and “My naked weapon is drawn. Quarrel, I will support you. The other type of comedy in the play was more traditional like the start of a panicked fight at the beginning "Are you biting our thumbs, sir?" I'm biting my thumb, sir. Are you biting our thumb, sir? [Apart from Grégoire] Is the law on our side if I say “Yes”? [Except for Sampson] no. No, sir, I'm not biting your thumb, sir, but I'm biting my thumb, sir. »(1.1.44-52). This comedy also broke down the wall between social classes and mentalities since scenes like this were funny for almost everyone. Both types of comedy were generally funny to almost everyone because they didn't depend on certain situations that only a select few would usually experience. So, it made the play even better in its entertainment purpose. The use of drama throughout the play is most prevalent in the final acts, but is also shown throughout the rest of the play. When Romeo is...... middle of paper...... Montagues and Capulets. For example, the first fight is provoked by this hatred alone: "My naked weapon is drawn. Quarrel, I will support you. How? Turn your back and run? Do not fear me. No, marry. I fear you! Let's do respect the law." on our side; let them begin. I'll frown as I pass, and let them take it as they want. No, if they dare, I will bite their thumb, which is a shame for them if they wear it. » (1.1.33-43). The actual fight was presented quickly after this in this way "Draw if you are men. - Gregory, remember your wash stroke. They are fighting. Part fools! [Draws his sword.] Raise your swords .You don't know what you're doing" (1.1.63-65). These elements were all combined in Romeo and Juliet and used to create an interesting plot for entertainment purposes. It was a success, as evidenced by how long this piece is interesting to watch. and listen.
