    Soma relieves you of any anxiety, negativity or emotion other than happiness. This is how people get paid to go to work, with the lower classes receiving less and the higher classes receiving larger portions. They are conditioned to believe that “one cubic centimeter cures ten dark feelings” (Huxley 60). Soma has no side effects that would make it harmful to society because it is widely used. It is similar to the antidepressants and medications we have today, except that it has no side effects. Drugs are used to escape or alleviate the pressures of life. The technology to manufacture and promote drugs with external effects harms society. Similar medications like antidepressants are becoming too readily available. “The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recommended against the use of antidepressants for the initial treatment of mild depression, as it said the risk-benefit ratio was low.” (Donnellan). These medications have many benefits, such as having a happy or stress-free day, but when they are easily available, people become dependent on them when they don't need them.
