General Robert E. Lee. He was one of the greatest and brightest of his time and perhaps even today. His lifespan, some would describe as nothing more than service to the rebel forces or a traitor. Abraham Lincoln offered him a position commanding Union troops during the Civil War. But he generously declined the offer because of his views on slavery. This is his life before the Civil War. Lee was the 4th child of Anne Hill Carter, his mother, and General Henry Lee III. His father was governor of Virginia, so he had a great influence on modern-day Virginia. Robert was mainly raised by his mother Anne, she taught him authority, tolerance and order and everything that made him what he later became. Lee was introduced to Christianity at a young age and was a follower of Christ. He always loved education and in 1829 he was accepted into West Point. After a period of time, he was appointed superintendent from 1852 to 1855.
