Essay / Why is evolution true? - 1950
In recent years, a political and religious movement that has sought to integrate theories competing with the theory of evolution into the curriculum of various schools in the United States. The theory proposed was the theory of "intelligent design", which, although not explicitly religious, makes it a theory much more compatible with religion than with evolution. The danger of this approach was that it attempted to dismiss a legitimate scientific theory as one among existing theories – an equal rival in the search for a true explanation. However, what proponents of this measure were actually doing was equating scientific theory with a vastly inferior narrative about the world. It was therefore necessary for an author like Coyne (2009) to write a book titled Why is Evolution True? Show what exactly is meant by the term scientific theory and when we can say that something is actually true. The theory of evolution is precisely this kind of theory because it has been confirmed in every situation in which its predictions have been tested and its evidence is found in the fossil record, comparative anatomy, embryology, molecular biology and biogeography. quite sophisticated scientific theory that has been subject to numerous misinterpretations and distortions. However, this can be explained very simply by integrating several important concepts into a single definition. Coyne (2009, p. 3) summarizes the whole theory in one sentence: “Life on Earth evolved gradually beginning with a primitive species – perhaps a self-replicating molecule – that lived more than 3.5 billions of years; it then diversified over time, releasing many new and diverse species; and the mechanism of most (but not all) evolutionary changes is natural...... middle of paper ......ution is the correct way to explain the facts of life in the world. For these reasons, the theory of evolution is an excellent example of an advanced scientific theory that cannot in any way be equated with pseudo-scientific claims that only serve various forms of propaganda.
