Moreno 1Araceli MorenoMr.HartshornEnglish III CPMarch 17, 2014The Stamp Act of 1765Many different laws changed the way the British colonies paid their taxes, others, like the Stamp Act, were both a beneficial, but unpopular tax. There was and still is no way to escape paying taxes. Every time one law seemed to fail, another was passed. This is exactly what happened when the Sugar Act, an indirect tax on any product containing sugar, failed and was repealed. Parliament then passed the Stamp Act, which was somewhat more effective since it was a direct tax unlike the Sugar Act. The cycle continued and the Stamp Act was also repealed, leading only to the Declaratory Act. The Stamp Act had a significant effect on the American War for Independence. After the French and Indian War, there was a large debt to pay and military supplies had to be purchased. George Grenville was forced to find a way to end the national debt and purchase all necessary supplies. To do this, Parliament adopted the Sugar Law. The Sugar Act imposed taxes on sugar imported from the West Indies. Many people were angry because the sugar law was an indirect tax. The only people affected by this taxation were sugar consumers and sugar importers in the British colonies. The majority of people who consumed tea, coffee, wine or many other products containing sugar paid the additional three cent tax because they couldn't seem to stop consuming these types of foods/drinks.Moreno 2People who almost never ate or drank things that included sugar did not care when this law passed Parliament. There were many economic problems as prices inflated as it became more difficult to obtain sugar. EMS...... middle of paper......is much more than other indirect taxes. The reasons why the Stamp Act was much more effective in leading to such a major event are obvious. This caused a lot of tension as the settlers boycotted as they had virtually no voice in any of the laws passed by Parliament. They were annoyed and acted very aggressively to be able to make themselves heard. It took them a long time to get what they wanted, but eventually they made their voices heard and the Stamp Act was repealed. The repeal of this law only led to more serious events, just like the Declaratory Act and the American War of Independence. Certain events had a major impact and they are still part of the present. Events such as the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act, the Declaratory Act and many other laws have something to do with later events, as does Moreno's American Revolution..
