  • Essay / Inequalities in the Spanish Empire - 1178

Not only were lower-class citizens disadvantaged in terms of political power and overall life satisfaction, but wealthy Filipino families also faced inequalities with Spain . Jose Rizal was a member of the wealthy “mestizo” family and disliked the stronghold of the Empire because of its potential superior mobility. Even though he and his family had the financial stability to live lavishly, Spain insisted that only those of pure Spanish blood hold political power (classroom film, SAW). We can see that even with money (which is what Spain cares about most, it seems), political power rests with the Spanish Empire and its descendants. The inequalities between poor and rich all seem relative in the sense that, regardless of family trust funds, Spanish blood is the top priority in politics and governance. The Philippines would experience a number of revolutionary leaders and would eventually have to rely on the United States to claim independence from the United States.
