Essay / The Marlboro Man and Cigarettes - 786
According to Webster's Dictionary, advertising can be defined as "something that is shown or presented to the public to help sell a product or to make an announcement." It is also defined as “a person or thing that shows how good or effective something is.” These two definitions help describe the before and after Marlboro cigarette advertising. The Marlboro started as a woman's cigarette, then completely transformed into a man's cigarette. The cigarette has a red stripe on the tip which was considered a way to hide women's lipstick when smoking. They came up with the idea of changing their market from women to men when a man changed his gender to woman. They had to go from a teahouse smoke to a manly cowboy type smoke, so they used a cowboy to do it. He was what they called the Marlboro Man. He even had a special tattoo in some advertisements that made customers think it was dedicated to his cigarettes. They kept the red tip to attract the woman, but they made the package more manly. The durable packaging alone made people want to buy the cigarette. They used colors for writing – red, white and black – that appealed to the smoker. This has been tested through consumer surveys and the Color Research Institute. Finally, Marlboro used its image not only on its packaging, but also put its logo on items such as clothing, beach towels, and baseball caps. This happened after cigarette advertising was banned. Marlboro cigarettes were able to completely transform their name; However, I'm not sure they should be considered the best. Twitchell thinks Marlboro would win if there was a prize for the perfect campaign, but I don't believe he's proven that point. Before reading the article, I...... middle of paper ......te after seeing it at the store when I ran the Color Run. The man in the store told me it was the best jacket ever, and once he had me feel the inside, I was sold. If he hadn't made a big deal about this jacket, I would never have known it existed and it wouldn't be on my Christmas list. I could go on and on about products I have purchased based primarily on the advertising or even just the product. what the product looks like. I'm the type of marketer who is attracted to the prettiest packaging, even if it costs five dollars more. Advertisements are just a part of our daily lives, but they affect us without us even knowing it. During the Super Bowl, we chat during the game and make everyone quiet during commercials just to see how amazing the commercials are that year. Advertisements will always be in our lives and they will continue to influence our opinion of products, forever.
