  • Essay / My first clinical rotation outside of 5w - 1227

During my first clinical rotation outside of 5w, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, I had the pleasure of visiting the operating room. During my last week of clinical internship, I had the opportunity to witness two different cases. I saw a hemorrhoidectomy and a laparoscopic colectomy. Although I didn't get to witness the hemorrhoidectomy until midway through the procedure, both procedures were quite invasive. Both cases were very interesting to watch. The collaborative team did a great job interacting in both cases. They were very professional and respectful of each other. Each team member played an important role in each procedure. During the first procedure, the hemorrhoidectomy, which involves removing hemorrhoids, the operating room nurse was a traveling nurse from Alabama. In his preoperative role, he was required to prepare the site, administer medications if necessary, insert any necessary catheterization, note patients' condition or changes, and obtain other supplies, if necessary. In the pre-operative checklist, the cleaning team counted the inventory of supplies. The OR nurse documented what had been opened. During preoperative observation, patients. When the patient arrives in the room, the nurse identifies them and makes sure they know which procedure is ready to take place. He then helped the CRNA place the patient on the bed. There were two scrub technicians. They prepared a clean, sterile field, before each case, donned PPE, and followed surgical aseptic precautions. Their main task during the procedure was to provide the surgeon with the materials he needed in the appropriate time frame. Before surgery, the ST received a card from the surgeon indicating the type of supplies needed. When the thrust...... middle of paper...... is loaded, until the patient regains bowel function. This duration may vary. Most patients normally follow a low-fluid diet until their intestines have completely recovered from the operation. (Mayo Clinic, 2012) It was a great experience for me in my first year. I had never been in an operating room and had no knowledge of how the collaborative team worked together. I was also unfamiliar with the role of an operating room nurse, which was a great addition to my training as a nursing student. Being able to observe this task, I can now say that I have witnessed two surgical procedures being performed, which is very critical in my nursing career path. Now that I have had the chance to witness these procedures, the operating room nurse position is one where I can envision my future as a nurse: “What You Can Expect” . Colectomy tests and procedures.
