  • Essay / Semantics - 1457

Language is the primary source of communication for humans and is used to convey thoughts, feelings, intentions and desires to others (Bonvillain 2008: 1). Many rules are taken into account when forming a language. According to Bolton, language is arbitrary and not representative of the objects it represents (Bolton 1996: 63). The study of semantics allows us to identify the meaning of words and expressions in their literal sense and helps us make sense of arbitrary sounds and expressions. Linguists and philosophers have contributed to it. Linguists have used lexical decomposition to understand the characteristics that make up words and the categories into which words fit. Philosophers have been more interested in the meaning of sentences, in truth conditions and references (Parker and Riley 2010: 28). Semantics is not yet a completely understood field and, therefore, it is not easy to study (Parker and Riley 2010: 26-27). ).Semantics is divided into three different sections: meaning, reference and truth conditions. Through semantics, we understand what words mean when they are spoken to us. Without semantics we could not understand ourselves. Semantics takes into account cultural, situational, and environmental constructions to develop meaning in different regions of the United States and around the world (Bonvillain 2008: 27). That being said, semantics brings several things to the English language that allow us to communicate on a deeper level and make our language more complex. Meaning is the study of the literal and intended meaning of words and expressions. Part of this section is lexical ambiguity. This happens when a word has more than one meaning. Parker and Riley use the example of the world...... in the middle of paper... and not in the other (Parker and Riley 2010: 40). Presuppositions are sentences that must be considered true in order to evaluate the validity of another sentence. For example, if I said "Judy Gen Shaft is the president of USF" and "Judy Gen Shaft is a good president", we would have to accept the idea that she is the president to understand whether she has been a good or a bad president. In conclusion, semantics is what we use to make sense of our language. It takes into account cultural references, environmental sayings and situational events. Perhaps the reason semantics is so difficult to understand is that it tries to make sense of something that makes no sense and of things that change from place to place. Without it, our language would be much more primitive than it is today, but thanks to it we can make sense of things, make references and understand the truth..
