Teachers must be able to express diverse beliefs and involve these beliefs in their personal experiences with students; willingness to discuss controversial issues is also a virtue. “According to a 2008 survey by the Public Agenda Foundation, 76 percent of new teachers said their training covered teaching diverse students, but only 39 percent called the training helpful” (Walker). For example, Christopher Columbus is celebrated as an American hero who discovered America.
