Essay / Who is my neighbor? - 1497
Constructing a ResponseIn this section I will outline a number of things that could be done in response to the question of how Christians should be hospitable to those of different religious traditions. The first thing that is important to consider is the silence of the congregation surrounding Jim's comments during our service. The fact that the congregation avoided Jim's comments makes it clear that a conversation needs to be had about hospitality and how we treat people of other faiths. The second thing I'll touch on is how I could have handled the conversation with Jim differently. In response to the congregation's silence and avoidance of Jim's comments during church, a number of things need to be done. I believe the first step for the congregation to take is to begin a community-wide conversation about interfaith relations. I also believe that we should discuss the question of how we should interact with people who have other religious perspectives. The second step that I believe needs to be taken is for the congregation to enter into dialogue with people of other faith traditions. This should be done in order to help the congregation develop a mutual understanding of other religions. Before the congregation enters into dialogue with people of other faith traditions, I believe it is important that they have a conversation within the Church. This conversation will have several parts and is expected to last approximately three months. There is no way to force people to attend, but I strongly recommend that all members of the congregation attend the sessions. During these sessions, we would explore what it means to call people our neighbors. We would explore examples in scripture that show us in the middle of a sheet of paper......and experiences. This experience confirmed my belief that it is necessary for local churches to engage in dialogue with people who do not believe as they do. Whether it is other faiths or other religions, it is essential that churches begin to learn about and interact with them. If Christians truly want to live according to the Gospels and become like Christ, we must begin by reconciling ourselves with those who do not believe as we do. In closing, I would like to say that my heart is broken for the members of the Brownsville UMC. who believe that Muslims will take over the United States. The people at this church are incredibly loving and genuine and I hate to see them so afraid. This whole experience has taught me to be careful about what I say, how I approach sensitive topics, and how I present my personal views to my future congregations..
