The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) represent the basic needs and rights that every human being would like to enjoy. This is a national commitment made in September 2000 at a United Nations Millennium Summit by 189 countries, including Jamaica (Sweetman, 2005, p.2). Its emergence has emerged as a major objective in a global development effort over a period of fifteen (15) years. These goals target the world's poorest groups of people and aim to eliminate extreme poverty and improve conditions for good health and well-being. There are eight goals to be achieved by 2015, each with more than one target.1. Eradication of poverty and hunger – the goal is to halve the rate of global poverty and hunger and achieve full and productive employment for all.2. Achieve universal primary education – its aim is to ensure that all children will successfully reach and complete primary education.3. Promote gender equality and women's empowerment – aiming to see more women in parliament, and a girls/boys ratio in primary, secondary and tertiary education4. Reduce infant mortality – that is, reduce the mortality rate by at least two-thirds among children under five (5) years of age and ensure that all infants are properly vaccinated before the age of one an.5. Improved maternal health – aimed at reducing maternal mortality and ensuring that mothers giving birth are cared for by skilled health personnel.6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases – aimed at educating people on the important use of condoms and contraceptives to reduce and prevent these diseases.7.
