A successful business has a great staff, made up of people working in different areas, all doing their best to move the business forward. Like an army, the workforce needs a leader, or perhaps a few, to ensure that everyone in the company is organized, informed, and all moving toward the company's goal. Some people may think that this person is the owner but most of the time this person is the manager. Successful managers must know and be able to apply the four management functions: planning, organizing, leading and controlling, to their daily work routine. Planning means specifying the objectives to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions necessary to achieve them. objectives (Bateman and Snell, 2007). All businesses, new and established, must have goals. Having a plan is crucial because it lets everyone know exactly what goals the business is heading toward. Plans help ensure that all staff members know what specific tasks they may need to complete for the company, as a whole, to achieve the goal. Planning activities may include analyzing the current situation, anticipating the future, determining goals, choosing the type of activities the company will engage in, choosing business and corporate strategies and determining the resources needed to achieve the organization's goals (Bateman and Snell). Once a plan has been established for a specific goal, organizing resources is now the next step. Organizing involves assembling and coordinating the human, financial, physical, informational, and other resources needed to achieve goals (Bateman and Snell, 2007). Organization is essential because a well-organized staff will be more effective in executing the company's plans. Let's say your company makes paper......and helps ensure their return, which is the company's goal. Leaders must always remember that the success of the business is important, because if the business fails then they fail. The practice of the four concepts of management is crucial to the success of the company as well as that of the manager. Having a plan, being organized and having a good leader is important, however, unexpected events can arise and a manager must be able to take control of the situation in order to achieve the company's goal.
