  • Essay / Informative Essay on Painkillers - 1221

In today's society, many patients are prescribed painkillers to relieve chronic pain, but many people abuse these prescription painkillers. Hydrocodone and oxycodone, two of the highest dose painkillers, are by far the most abused by those who have no medical reason to take them. These painkillers provide a feeling of euphoria or intense happiness that makes them particularly addictive in today's society. Addiction to painkillers is dangerous because it destroys a person's life and they could become completely dependent on the drug. It could control their days to the point that they couldn't function without them. Keep in mind that these prescription painkillers are also the leading cause of overdoses in the United States, for those who need them. This makes them much more addictive because they are everywhere. Although painkiller addiction comes from adolescents to older adults, adolescents are the most affected. Teenagers believe it is a safe way to get high, and that marijuana is not safe. In fact, in one survey, 50% of teens thought illegal drugs weren't as safe as taking prescription painkillers. This false assumption led to thousands of addictions and many overdose deaths because teens believed painkillers were safe. Finally, adolescents are at a much higher risk of becoming dependent on painkillers than adults. This is because a teenager's brain is not fully developed, especially when it comes to impulses. So teenagers know that this effect is good for them, they continue to take it and slowly become dependent on painkillers. The majority of prescription painkiller addicts are adolescents because of their habit of experimenting and their desire to try new products. Scary test results show that 70% of teenagers who abuse painkillers do so without their parents knowing they are taking their pills. These teens are experimenting because they want to have a little more fun, lose a little weight, or study more effectively, but they risk becoming addicted to this life-changing legal drug. Additionally, these teens want to succeed in sports and keep them relaxed, but painkillers are 100% contradictory to this theory because painkillers are the main ones. Children (10-14 years old) usually watch their father, mother, grandmother or brother/sister take a painkiller. and I think it's okay. For example, a little girl watches her brother take an ADHD pill every morning and complains that he has no appetite. This little girl might want to lose weight and realize that she might gain weight too, so she won't have an appetite either. She thought it was okay because it was prescribed by a doctor; therefore, she also took the medicine like her brother. Painkillers have wide channels to receive them, whether from parents, doctors, or drug sellers on the street. Additionally, not all children want to become addicted to painkillers nor do they want to make poor decisions in school because of it. Addiction to painkillers is preventable, but in some children it is accidental and in their minds they didn't know any better. Children are constantly being introduced to these different pain medications such as ADD/ADHD and painkillers. From a young age, some children have to take Ritalin, Concerta or Adderall just to concentrate, but this can quickly turn.
