How developed is Brazil? Context - How developed is Brazil? Brazil, along with Mexico, is considered one of the new industrialized countries of South America. It is claimed that Brazil is “the 10th largest economy in the world”. However, in some urban areas, 50% of the population lives below the “poverty line”. Recent changes (1970 - 1998): - More people employed in the manufacturing industry. - Fewer people employed in agriculture, but between 1982 and 1990 cultural production increased by 38%. More than 50% of the population is employed in services. - Increase in land used for agriculture – large plantations and livestock farming. - Rapid growth of “informal sector” jobs – work without official register (especially in cities) such as street vendors, repairers, decorators, etc. .- Rapid growth of cities – more than 75% of the population lives in cities.
