'Good Night Mr. Tom' by Michelle Magorian tells the story of a young boy who is evacuated from London during World War II. He lives with an elderly man named Mr. Tom in a town called "Little Weirwold". As soon as William Beech arrives home, Mr. Tom quickly discovers that he comes from a very poor background and was badly beaten by his mother. Everything was going well until Will's mother asked that he return to London because she was ill. Will did not write to Mr. Tom as he had promised and this made him very suspicious, so he went down to find him. A guard locates him at Will's house and breaks down the door. When they find Will, he is trapped in a closet attached to a pipe, holding his deceased little sister. After a long period of convalescence, William and Mr. Tom both returned to Little Weirwold, where William was helped back to health. Later in the book; Zach's father falls ill so he goes to meet him at the hospital, where he is killed. The rest of the book is about William dealing with the death of his best friend.
