  • Essay / Language as a tool of manipulation - 1482

In the contemporary world, many dangers await everyone. One of these dangers is a phenomenon of manipulation which, thanks to the development of the media, makes it more and more popular. Manipulation is said to consist of controlling someone or something for one's own advantage, often in an unfair or dishonest way'1, in other words, it is an operation of persuasion that shapes attitudes or beliefs. behaviors in such a way that the recipient cannot recognize these techniques. This also poses a particular problem because, using certain tricks, manipulation treats us objectively and affects our thoughts, behavior and decisions. Language is a powerful tool of manipulation that is mainly used in advertisements. We must therefore be aware of certain techniques used to control or modify our behavior. Advertising is considered a game between the sender and the receiver. In order to achieve an effective advertising message, it is mandatory to represent a promise in an intriguing way, attract the customer's attention and make it easy to remember. An advertisement must be concise, natural and sensible. Certain techniques are used to arouse our interest. After a long reflection, I decided to divide them into two sections: interaction through the verbal message, and interaction on emotions through the awakening of feelings. The first group focuses on the verbal message produced by the advertisement, I mean elements such as attractiveness, ease of memorization, suggestiveness, conciseness and originality of the language used. The first thing to do is to use catchy phrases. Catchy phrases are usually short and make it easy for us to remember the phrase spoken in the advertisement. A good slogan should be memorable because it is the most important part of the advertising text, for example..... middle of paper ...... focuses on maintaining the rhythm of the advertising, the causes lack of concentration on their essential content. There is no time to reflect on what was left out or unfinished. The result of this kind of situation is false clarity. In summary, there is much that is not said about language as an instrument of manipulation. The speech of advertisements is created only to convince future consumers to buy that particular product or service. Among consumers, it is believed that when we buy something that is heavily advertised or recommended by a panel of experts, VIPs, we feel much more appreciated, even richer. This is why, in order not to be manipulated, we must, as consumers, be aware of the mechanisms of manipulation and persuasion that surround us and the language used in many advertisements. It will be easier to control our behavior during races and in everyday life.
