Essay / « Bowling for Columbine” by Michael Moore - 1338
Michael Moore was born on April 23, 1954. He is an American filmmaker, author and liberal political commentator. He has directed and produced four of the eight highest-grossing documentaries of all time. In 2005, Time Magazine named Moore one of the world's "one hundred most influential people." The documentary “Bowling for Columbine” explores the possible causes of the Columbine High School massacre. It won the prize for “Best Feature Documentary” at the Oscars and the Independent Spirit Awards, as well as the César for “Best Foreign Film”. In this footage, US warplanes are seen dropping bombs on residential areas of a village in Kosovo. Then US President Bill Clinton said they were "trying not to hurt innocent civilians." Following this, there is a caption reading "one hour later" with the president talking about the shooting at Columbine High School. Now a transition occurs where the screen fades to an image of the school entrance, showing a plaque that says "Columbine High School-Home." rebels. The video shifts to a subjective point of view, showing someone entering the school while the audio is that of a sad acoustic guitar. As the person walks through the school with his camera, he ironically stops and takes images of a soldier with a gun in his hand. CCTV (closed circuit television) footage is then shown, showing children at the school rushing around trying to protect themselves from the onslaught of munitions and explosives. A shot of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold firing ammunition and throwing grenades in the lobby is followed, during which a phone call to emergency services from Eric's father saying his son was involved in the shooting is broadcast by -above. We...... middle of paper ... also exposes the US government, because when President Clinton says that "they are trying to minimize civilian casualties", he "forgets" to say that the Americans targeted the hospitals and primary schools. If I were American, I would feel dishonored and ashamed of my people. Michael Moore uses all the techniques of filmmaking like location, lighting, and body language to help viewers identify the genre and context of the film. He makes a brilliant and exciting documentary about the Columbine shootings. I think the sequence is thought provoking. Perhaps it is just a subtle reminder for us to stop and think for a moment if we are going in the right direction or should we turn a blind eye to what is happening around us? My opinion is that such violence, the use of weapons and ammunition, should be totally condemned all over the world..
