  • Essay / Conflicts in "The Storm" - 804

Conflict is one of the main drivers of a story. Without conflict, the characters in the story would have no reason to do anything. For this reason, every story requires some type of conflict to progress. Types of conflict can range from one man enduring the elements, known as man versus nature, to one character versus a larger group, man versus society. In addition to other styles of conflict, the most relevant and compelling is where one character is pitted against another, known as man versus man. Kate Chopin's story "The Tempest" presents three examples of man versus man style conflict, Bobinot versus his wife Calixtra, Alcee versus Calixta, and Alcee versus his wife Clarisse, these show how non-violent conflict can arise between the characters. The first example that is shown is a man versus man style conflict, Bobinot versus his wife Calixtra. This conflict can be divided into two events, Bobinot being out in the storm, and when he lets his son Bibi get dirty. In the first, Bobinot out in the storm, it is shown that he has decided to stay in the store until the storm is over. This is explicitly stated in the line "They were at Friedheimer's store and decided to stay there until the storm passed." » Forced to stay inside the store because of the storm, Bibi then declares that "Mom will be scared", to which Bobinot agrees, and buys a box of shrimp to comfort Calixta when she arrives home. The scene shows that “Calixta, at home, felt no concern for her safety.” The concern the two believe they have for them, and their preparations to comfort his concern, are the basis of this part of the conflict between Bobinot and Calixta. The next part of their conflict is middle of paper......h Calixtra, either arriving unexpectedly or finding out, their marriage would be ruined. This shows that the conflicts between the two are. those based on deception. Finally, “The Tempest” by Kate Chopin is a story of varied conflicts. Bobinot's conflict against Calixtra showed that conflict can be linked to relationship issues, such as one person worrying about another or failing in their duties. Alcee's conflict with Calixtra showed another side of relationship problems, with both not wanting their partners to find out about their actions and their guilt for committing the acts. The final conflict of the story, Alcee versus Clarisse, shows that deception can be another source of conflict, as evidenced by Alcee sending a misleading letter to Clarisse. In conclusion, this story shows that conflicts can arise even in the absence of physical confrontation..
