  • Essay / War against ISIS or the Islamic State (ISIL)

Right now, the United States faces a dilemma: whether or not to go to war against ISIS or the Islamic State (ISIL ). This author believes that the United States should not go to war against ISIS. The reasons are simple. On the one hand, going to war against ISIS or ISIL could validate what they are trying to accomplish. It’s about attracting moderates and transforming them into extremists, thereby expanding their influence and power globally. The second reason is that a war against them would leave the United States open to internal attacks. The reason this would happen is because we are so focused there and our security here won't be as strong as it would be if we didn't go to war. The third reason is that the United States does not have a clear, planned strategy for dealing with ISIS. The fourth and final reason is by far the most important. If you look at history you will see that we have tried to win this type of war before and it has proven impossible to win. The United States may achieve minor victories, but we will never completely win in the Middle East. ISIS is not a ridiculous army, it is made up of some of Saddam Hussein's closest generals and to take them lightly would be downright stupid. As the no-war proponents say in the ISIS article: “Is America provoking a backlash among the very people it needs to convince? (ISIS) They make a very valid argument. By stating this, they are saying that if we engage in military action against ISIS, we could validate extremists' views that "America is a threat to all Muslims" (ISIS) and, in doing so, Muslim population, which is only moderate, could become extremist and join the group. The cause of the Islamic State. This type of action would only strengthen ISIS's power and influence and make its reach even wider...... middle of paper ...... before they can create the means necessary to carry out a September 11 attack. -like a tragedy” (ISIS). The problem with this argument again lies in looking at history. Al-Qaeda is responsible for the September 11 attacks. ISIS was formerly part of Al-Qaeda and has therefore carried out this type of attack before. Since we are responsible for the creation of ISIS, wouldn't it be justified to say that the 9/11 attacks were our fault? In conclusion, if the United States engages with ISIS, our homeland could be compromised. The Islamic State is not located in one place. These people managed to extend their influence everywhere. Spreading our forces even wider than they are could have “disastrous effects” on the United States. Our actions could also encourage people who are unsure about joining the ISIS movement to do so, making ISIS even stronger. This is why the United States should not go to war against ISIS or ISIL..
