One form of constant surveillance in 1984 is the use of TV screens. Main character Winston is closely monitored while being part of the Outgroup and working at the Ministry of Truth. Even in the comfort of his own home, Winston has no privacy, nor does anyone in all of Oceania. The party hides numerous microphones throughout the city to detect any disloyalty to Big Brother. The party is also proficient in psychological manipulation to prevent minds from thinking for themselves. The party also bluntly announces that “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU”, scrutinizing the people of Oceania (publishers SparkNotes). The party managed to organize a small squad of children known as the Junior Spies by brainwashing them in an attempt to continue their espionage. In Huxley's Brave New World, surveillance is completely different from 1984 in that it is carried out through people rather than devices. In Brave New World, people are conditioned (brainwashed) before “birth” and therefore their image of their world is perfect. Everyone is happy, even the Epsilons with their menial duties and contribution to society. Bernard Marx is an Alpha and has the ability to think for himself for as long as
