  • Essay / Integumentary system and albinism - 1541

All organ systems work together; to maintain and support the conditions that cells, tissues and organs need to function properly. Each organ system has an important function in the body. There is a system that is not as well known as another; This is the integumentary system. Most people know about the organs of the integumentary system, but they don't know that these organs work together to form this system. The integumentary system is composed of the skin and skin-related structures, including hair, nails, sensory receptors, and glands (Shier, Butler, & Lewis, 2009). This system has an important function since it protects the body, helps maintain body temperature, and contains sensory receptors (p.117). The skin has essential functions such as regulating homeostasis and body temperature, also delaying water loss from deeper tissues, storing sensory receptors, synthesizing biomechanical elements and removing waste from the body (e.g. 117). The skin is made up of two layers: the epidermis (outer layer) and the dermis (inner layer) (p.117). There is also a subcutaneous or hypodermis layer (p.117). According to Shier, Butler and Lewis 2009 “as the name suggests, this layer lies beneath the skin and not an actual layer of skin” (p. 117). This layer contains the blood vessels that supply the skin (p. 117). The epidermis, which is the outer layer of the skin, is made up of four to five layers in some parts (Shier, Butler, & Lewis, 2009). In the majority of areas, only four layers can be differentiated: the stratum basale, the stratum spinosum, the stratum granulosum and the stratum corneum (p.119). Another layer is the clear layer which is found in the thickest part of the skin of the palms and ...... middle of paper ...... and which is also very affected in people with albinism. Usually, people with albinism wait until sunset to go out and do some of these activities. Some people with albinism have emotional regulation issues that are primarily affected by how society reacts to their appearance. We have no control over the genes we inherit or the disabilities that may arise, which is why it is important that society is informed about the functions of our organ system. For example, the integumentary system which is not as well known as the others, but plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis, regulating body temperature and keeping our hair and skin soft. We all have flaws and disabilities to some extent, which is why it is important to be aware and understand these differences and how our bodies work, so that we can live and help others live a more productive life...
