  • Essay / Exploring Religion Outside My Comfort Zone - 1455

After each scripture was read, the two performers played a short melody before allowing the next scripture to be read, and they raised their hands to wave for the audience to sing. In my church, all scriptures are read at once and all tunes are sung separately from the scripture readings. Additionally, in a Baptist church the audience is not necessarily invited to sing, they are given the option to sing or sit still and enjoy the deal. Even though these were small differences, they were still differences that caught my attention. Among these small differences, I wanted to know why Catholics sing after each scripture. After doing some research, I realized that these little tunes are not necessarily songs. These tunes are the Scriptures sung instead of spoken. Catholics believe that singing is a superior form of worship to monotonous speaking. Learning this was kind of fun for me because the whole time they were "singing" I was going through their hymn book trying to find the corresponding hymns so I could sing with them when all I had to do was open my hymn book.
