Essay / Washington's Farewell Address - 1624
George Washington, the first president of the United States, had written a very important speech and historical document near the end of his term. He had written the Farewell Address which aimed to help America understand the importance of preserving unity, recognizing the rise of political parties, strengthening religion and morality, and he had outlined his position on American foreign policy. He approached these ideas with a strong tone and used an incredible amount of diction that reinforces his tone and represents to a large extent his call to ethos. However, today's society seems to have forgotten Washington's position on foreign policy and has created a new form of politics. But nevertheless, as time passes, changes occur. In today's society, Washington's foreign policy would have many positive and negative manifestations, but it is still a speech and a document that will always apply to America. One of the main purposes of Washington's farewell address was to alert American citizens that America should not get involved in foreign relations, particularly given tensions between the French and British . He wanted America to remain neutral in foreign matters and not form long-term alliances with other nations. He said that "Europe has a set of primary interests that, for us, have none or are very distant." He explained that it was not wise for America to get involved in artificial ties. Washington believed that if America behaved toward foreign nations, it would influence the people as well as the government to act as they wished. In other words, Washington encouraged Americans to enjoy their new union and avoid political relations with others as much as possible. Washington was also concerned about...... middle of paper ......r helping each other and also helping to vote for the country. However, even today, America still has groups of political parties that affect the country both positively and negatively, contrary to what Washington thought. He said that parties would cause problems but it is the parties that keep the government intact and also help in making decisions for the country. Washington's farewell speech focused primarily on foreign policy, but he expressed concern for his other ideas such as religion and unity. . Today's foreign policy differs from what Washington had hoped for in its farewell address, but its current policy would have many different positive and negative manifestations. With its strong use of diction reinforcing its tone as well as its appeal to ethos, Washington's speech certainly played a role in America's current position today..
