Essay / Are men mothers? : fatherhood, care and domestic tasks...
Traditionally, mothers are responsible for staying at home to look after children and carry out daily household chores. However, in recent years, men have become more and more involved in the household. Men share more of the same responsibilities as women in terms of household and child-rearing. Many fathers choose to stay at home to care for their children rather than work outside the home; either due to a break in employment or because their wives earn a higher salary than them. In a modern study, an increased number of working mothers as well as an increase in the number of stay-at-home fathers were observed in Canada (Sutherland 2008). This is where the need arises to analyze whether fathers are competent to provide care and care as well as mothers. In his book Do Men Mother?: Fathering, Care, and Domestic Responsibility, Doucet explores the life of a father by illustrating whether fathers primarily play the role of mother or mothering when caring for their children (Doucet 2006). .Andrea Doucet, currently on sabbatical leave, is professor of sociology at Carleton University located in Ottawa, Canada. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from York University and her Masters in International Development from Carleton University. Doucet continued her studies at the University of Cambridge where she obtained her doctorate (Carleton University 2011). Besides book chapters, most of her works over the past sixteen years are scholarly articles that provide meaning and clarify theoretical and experiential understanding of topics related to care and work, gender issues and life in Company. A significant number of his works address several issues such as responsibility, self...... middle of paper ...... self as a father (Doucet 2006: 217). Drawing on several theoretical perceptions, the work offers an inventory of the distribution of domestic responsibilities and virility (Doucet 2006). Furthermore, it also produces literature on parenting as a result of analyzing the role of fathers from the maternal perspective. Do Men Mother?: Fathering, Care and Domestic Responsibility explores the concerns of men who choose to remain full-time fathers in order to meet the needs of their children rather than work outside the home (Doucet 2006). The book has a huge impact in that it makes readers aware of the difference between the roles of mothers, as well as the responsibilities of fathers, while the common goal of providing adequate care and love to their children are shared between the two sexes..
