Essay / History May Repeat Itself: Solving the Foreclosure Crisis
The phrase “history repeats itself” is usually referenced with a negative connotation; but why can't positive decisions made in history also be repeated? If evil repeats itself, why not good? In the 1930s, when President Franklin Roosevelt took office after the Great Depression, he began implementing new programs under the name "New Deal." These programs, nicknamed “Alphabet Soup,” helped create jobs, grow the American economy, and lift the country out of the despair into which it had fallen. Once again, this country has fallen into despair. Many Americans find themselves unemployed, homeless and even struggling to get by. Unemployment rates are skyrocketing, up to 15% in some states, foreclosure rates continue to rise every day while more than 40 million Americans living in poverty (McCormally) cannot pay the mortgage of their house. Once again, America is in a depression and we need to get out of it, and fast. To resolve this crisis of property foreclosures, or at least pave the way for a better tomorrow, a renewed “New Deal” must be put in place. The biggest problem helping to cause the foreclosure crisis is that people don't have the money to pay the mortgage each month. As a society, we have gone from paying with cash to having to pay with a shiny plastic card that really has no significant value. This reliance on credit cards has sent us into a downward spiral, especially when unemployment is skyrocketing. When a house goes into foreclosure, no one wins. The family that lives in this house no longer has a home and the bank that lent the family the money will never see that money again. To resolve this crisis, money is needed. Simply giving money does not solve the problem; people... middle of paper ...... in a fast-paced society, skills learned can be used, financial management skills taught, and more jobs can be created. Thanks to them, money will be earned. This money will be split between the worker, as is currently the case, and the mortgage company to help them avoid foreclosure. With this “New, New Deal,” the foreclosure crisis that the United States currently finds itself in can be stopped and reversed. It’s true that history repeats itself, so let’s learn from our past to protect our future. Works Cited McCCormally, Kevin. “How your income stacks up.” Yahoo! Finance. December 23, 2009.
