  • Essay / A Modest Proposal - 863

My fellow Americans, we are faced with an alarming trend that has serious consequences for our nation. This is a trend that, if not slowed, will continue to accelerate the degradation of the country's intellect as a whole. While we worry that our children at home are falling behind foreign students in class, we are ignoring a serious problem among so-called educated adults. The problem we face, ladies and gentlemen, is the terrible grammar that many people use. I've thought a lot about this problem and how to fix it. Many have tried to teach good grammar but failed and it is because they focus their attention in the wrong way. Adults have tried in vain to teach good grammar to America's youth. Children learn the difference between "your" and "you are", "to" and "also", but teachers do not make children understand how important good grammar is to being a useful member of society. Children end up not taking this grammar education as seriously as they should. These children become adults who make grammatical errors that should have been corrected long ago. This gap is most prevalent on social media sites and text messaging and needs to be stopped immediately. It is with great pride that I announce that I have formulated a solution to the grammatical crisis we face. It's such a foolproof solution that soon grammar enthusiasts will never again have to shake their heads in dismay at people's atrocious grammar. My proposal is called the Three-Stage Plan and applies to everyone who has graduated from high school. Anyone caught showing blatant disregard for proper grammar three times will be banished for life to a remote area with other linguistic criminals. Vigilance is...... middle of paper ......unt, subject to the discretion of the Supreme Grammar Court, as a violation. By giving someone two chances to correct their subpar grammar before being fired, this proposal is a compassionate and ethical approach to solving this country's grammar problems. Let it be known that no one, myself or anyone else, is responsible for enforcing the provisions of the Three Strikes. Plan, are in no way immune from prosecution. Everyone, from the president to the factory worker, is subject to the same rules. I am simply a man deeply concerned about the sad state of grammar in this country. I hope that one day this great nation will be freed from the horror of terrible grammar and that a child will never have to see the word "to" used incorrectly. If you share this wonderful dream with me, the three-step plan is surely the best method to achieve the goal of universal and proper grammar..
