Technology is gradually becoming integrated into the daily activities of society. From the moment we wake up in the morning with the help of our alarm clocks, to the moment we turn off the light to go to bed, we are regularly reminded that we now live in a modern world. Technology is present everywhere we turn. One of the most important technological products is the Internet. The World Wide Web (www) is part of almost everyone's daily life. In addition to computers, we can also use our portable devices to access the Internet. The ability to have unlimited access to the Internet from anywhere and at any time has become the cause of a serious addiction that affects approximately one in eight Americans; this addiction is called internet addiction. Internet addiction is a compulsive behavioral disorder that affects the way a person lives their daily life (Weinstein and Lejoyeux). This causes serious tension in the addict's family, friends, and work environment. This addiction is simply a behavioral disorder that completely governs the addict's entire life. Internet addicts are making the Internet their one and only priority, and it is slowly becoming a growing epidemic. Internet addiction was initially introduced as a disorder by Ivan Goldberg in 1995 (“Ivan Goldberg Discusses Internet Addiction”). This is still being researched and debated to see if it can be considered a psychological disorder. Comparing different types of addictions helps people better understand the severity of Internet addiction. For example, a person addicted to alcohol is addicted to their “drink of choice”; this drink of choice is everything to them. The addict and his alcohol have a bond that makes life easier.
