Essay / Fight for Equality: Understanding Black America's Struggle
Black people were used as slaves throughout the decades and were led to believe they were subordinate to white people. Blacks could not do the same as whites until equality rights were passed by Congress. Black people wanted to be recognized as human beings and not animals. Many different forms of discrimination are used against black people. People might be overly biased and prejudiced, meaning a person might just not like you because they don't like your race. Stereotypes can be used to attribute the same characteristics to all members of a group, regardless of individual differences. Stereotypes are often based on misconceptions, incomplete information and/or false generalizations. In most cases, stereotypes imply negative characteristics about a group. Racial profiling is a form of stereotyping. This means that the police and government base specific crimes on specific races rather than on reasonable suspicion or evidence, in order to single out an individual and subject them to closer scrutiny based on their different characteristics. These forms of racism made black people feel worthless in a white society.
