  • Essay / Application of the International Classification of...

ICFThe WHO (World Health Organization) developed the ICF to provide a uniform and standardized language that can be used to describe functions and areas related to health at the international level (Stucki and Rauch 2010). The ICF addresses issues previously encountered by healthcare professionals regarding the lack of integrity between human functions and disabilities, making it difficult to implement a comprehensive rehabilitation and research program (Stucki and Rauch 2010). The International Classification of Impairment, Handicap, and Handicap (ICIDH), the model used before the ICF, has been heavily criticized for the definitions of impairment, disability, and handicap used in that model and for its focus on more about the consequences of disorder or illness and disability than that even the environment has a role to play in a person's level of disability (Davis and Madden 2006). On the contrary, the ICF is a biopsychosocial model that describes humans in the physical, social and psychological environment (Mittrach et al 2008). The structure of the ICFICF is mainly divided into two parts; the first part includes functioning and disability and includes the components Body Functions and Structure, Activities and Participation. The second part includes contextual factors, namely environmental and personal factors (Mittrach et al 2008). However, a proper process to educate healthcare professionals regarding its use is necessary. It helps in documenting the basic health status of patients and its correlation with the goals gives a systematic idea of the rehabilitation process. Leena's case was helpful in writing this essay, it gave a practical perspective of how ICF, goal planning and rehabilitation can be merged and emerge a standard format, taking into consideration not only the physical and functional state but the individual as a whole with their contextual and environmental factors. As a physiotherapist, working in the rehabilitation team using the ICF will give me the opportunity to work holistically and visualize my patient with their complete health status. Recognizing this and implementing a comprehensive rehabilitation protocol will help pave the way for a positive outcome..
