Comparing Oku no hosomichi and Tosa nikki reveals similarities that make one think that they are the same story, and many differences that give the impression that they are simply in different formats. They both have similarities in that they are both travelogues and both narrate their farewells before their journey. In addition to the similarities, there were many differences. The writing styles of the two newspapers were different. Additionally, Oku no hosomichi had two written characteristics that Tosa nikki did not have, and was a philosophy while Tosa nikki was not.
