  • Essay / Nursing Student Research in Ireland - 2553

IntroductionThe aim of this article is to undertake a critical evaluation of two research articles. The assignment will be presented in two parts. The first part will present a critique of a qualitative study carried out by Keogh et al (2008) into the clinical experience of adult mental health nursing students in Ireland. The second part is quantitative research carried out by Deasy et al (2010), an exploratory study into the role transition from student to registered nurse (general, mental health and intellectual disability) in Ireland. Critique of a research article involves the analysis of a research report to determine its appropriateness to the identified problem (Morse, 1994). NMC (2008) expects all nurses to provide care based on the best available evidence or best practice. The nurse must know how to critique research articles so that they can adhere to the NMC code of conduct. (Holzemer, 2010). Nurses are increasingly expected to understand and conduct research and to base their professional practice on evidence from evidence-based practice (EBP) (Polit & Beck, 2008). Therefore, my article will critically examine the salient aspects of the research process in each article, including the title and abstract, introduction and literature review as well as methods and ethical considerations; in each article with the aim of identifying strengths and/or weaknesses and making suggestions where appropriate. In conclusion to the review of each article. I will critically review the data analysis and presentation as well as the discussion and conclusion as well as the implications for practice. Research is fundamental in the development of new approaches in nursing, it is fundamental for nurses to be able to critique research articlesPart OneIntroductionNurse education in practice...... middle of article... ...ilkins.Sapsford, R., & Jupp, V.
