As the world evolves and advances with technology, criminal organizations are taking advantage of new opportunities. The advancement of travel, ease of communication, and increased demand have all contributed to the globalization of crime. Every nation has been affected by the globalization of crime and the problem continues to get worse. The term globalization is defined as the development of an increasingly integrated world economy, marked in particular by free trade, the free movement of capital and the exploitation of cheap foreign labor markets ("Globalization", 2013) . Whenever there is economic gain or a need for cheap labor, crime has the opportunity to grow. The globalization of crime goes back hundreds of years. One example is that in the late 1600s and 1700s, the ocean became the primary source of travel for merchants. With the establishment of trade routes, criminals had the opportunity to steal when ships were most vulnerable. These criminals were commonly called pirates and their numbers increased as countries developed and trafficking increased. The problem became so bad that countries used their navies to protect ships and track down pirate ships. As the world expands and explorers set out to discover new lands, the ability to reach other civilizations becomes a reality. The discovery of new drugs or rare items in other countries has led criminal groups to expand their reach to take advantage of this new market. Many newly built communities lacked adequate protection or law enforcement, leading to small groups of marauders who terrorized the settlers and took their food and supplies. It also helped develop relationships with people from two different countries sharing a common goal. A crime in the middle of paper......national crime. By sharing information, monitoring problems, and stopping illegal criminal activity before it spreads, law enforcement has the best chance of preventing international crime. In conclusion, globalization has led to the expansion of technology and wealth throughout the world. By opening the borders of each nation, it gives people the opportunity to learn from each other and become a better world. Unfortunately, good brings evil. Open borders give criminal elements the opportunity to expand and take advantage of those less fortunate. It is important that nations unite in their efforts to combat the globalization of crime by working together and sharing information.
