    For centuries, power was what led empires to glory, but also saw their defeat. Power as defined by Webster's Dictionary reads: a person or organization that has a great deal of control and influence over other people or organizations. Authority, on the other hand, is defined as: the power to give orders or make decisions: the power or right to direct or control someone or something. These two definitions may seem similar, but in reality they are very different. In the 21st century, power rests solely on rule, a good example of this is the American presidency. These ordinary citizens are elected to lead the country and therefore given power. They do not necessarily have authority over the American people, since they are elected representatives. The power of the president is universally unquestioned in America, as he/she will lead the executive branch of the country in the future. Whether directing the country's day-to-day operations or conducting diplomacy abroad, the president is also America's sole representative abroad. With the recent US elections, they have seen a new surge in popularity....
