Essay / Economics, Accounting, Finance and Management - 481
Having a flair for economics and accounting, I decided I wanted a degree in accounting and finance or management. The many brilliant representatives of the management community around the world have reinforced this determination. When I worked in my school as an ESL tutor for students at a community school in Muscat, I realized the importance of a strong leader who could organize, command respect and be capable to work well with others. These ideas were reinforced by my one-month internship at Novartis Pharmaceutical (Accounting and Finance Department and Human Resources Department). I attended the Harvard Model Congress in Paris and won the Distinction Award. One skill in particular that contributed to this award was my proficiency in public speaking. The last 4 months have been crucial in my learning about real-world business and economics. For my in-depth IB essay, titled “To what extent does the Oman Metro operate as an oligopoly,” I set out to prove the oligpolistic structure of the fast food market in Oman. In this effort, I encountered many real-world complexities in pricing behavior, profit making, and other aspects of business theory. In trying to explain these alternative theories of business, I developed a keen interest in analyzing and understanding how the business world works. After an undergraduate degree in accounting and finance or management, I plan to pursue graduate studies and work on an MBA. A strong performance in a BA will allow me to move on to an MBA and only then will I be satisfied. For the past four years, I have been a part of our school's volleyball team, ICE. We retained our ISAC (Inter Schools Activities Conference, Middle East) title for four years. Playing in the power hitter (spiker) position requires immense fitness and to achieve this, I regularly go to the gym to train. I am also part of my school's track and field team. Being the fastest sprinter in school since grade 11, 100m, 200m and 400m races are my specialty although I still run long distances. In my free time, I explore and master computer science because I know a Visual Basic programming course..
