  • Essay / Matthew and Luke Essay - 742

Matthew characterizes Jesus as the prophesied Messiah who has finally arrived. Whenever an important event occurs, Matthew emphasizes that these events fulfill some specific prophecy. One example is the revelation that the power of the Holy Spirit caused the Virgin Mary to conceive. Matthew 1:22-23 says, “All this happened to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call his name Immanuel.” » Later, Matthew 2:18 cites a prophecy of Jeremiah that predicted Herod's actions, and Matthew again cites another prophecy in Matthew 2:15 where "the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 'I have brought out my son of Egypt. This was at the time when Joseph, Mary and Jesus fled to Egypt to escape the wrath of Herod. Other important details that fulfilled the prophecies are Joseph's lineage from the House of David and Jesus' childhood in Nazareth (making him a Nazarene). (Matt. 2:23) The final picture that Matthew intends to depict is that Jesus fulfilled so many specific prophecies in the Old Testament, that surely, without doubt, Jesus was the Messiah for whom the Jews were waiting.
