  • Essay / Overpopulation of India and China - 1218

The human population is increasing dramatically every second, with the addition of a billion people every 12 years. Overpopulation creates a multitude of problems ranging from environmental to social problems. Nations that achieve large populations introduce a wide range of problems to the world around them and to those nations. These environmental problems include, but are not limited to, lack of resources such as food and water; which can lead to malnutrition among large parts of the population, poor air quality and overuse of fossil fuels such as oil. Social problems that arise from an overabundant population include overpopulation, limits on freedom, and an increase in the number of uprisings and conflicts within the nation itself. China and India are the two most populous countries in the world. China has a population of 1.34 billion people and India follows closely as the second most populous country with a population of 1.21 billion people (Index Mundi). This represents 37% of the world's population (Index Mundi). China is home to up to 20 percent of the world's population, or 1.3 billion people, and India is expected to soon surpass China's population in 2028, according to the United Nations (5). Due to the increasing population, China and India have pursued several policies in the past. These policies range from China's strict one-child policy to India's flexible national population policy. In retrospect, if the Indian government does not become stricter and enforce its population policies and provide proper sex education, the Indian population will surpass the Chinese population within China and India has reached a population overabundant due to its history. “Even though China is in the middle of paper......BBC News.
