Essay / The Role of Marriage in the Regency Era - 1390
From there it passed to Charlotte Lucas. They are both another couple who have different views on marriage and also different characteristics. Charlotte is on the "older" side of the spectrum at age 27 and makes her appear less attractive to men. On the other hand, she is a very sensible woman and she also has different views on marriage and love that are different from the norm during the Regency era. Charlotte believes that women should not marry for love, but rather for their well-being and also to achieve stability. Women should get married to have stability and fall in love with their husbands later. Charlotte wanted to please her family while continuing to bring luck. Mr. Collins, on the other hand, is very different from Charlotte. He is very full of himself, somewhat clumsy and seems boring at times. He has a different mood towards marriage and thinks that it should be somewhat out of love and he also believes that he should be married to someone who is good with himself. Unfortunately, the two men do not mix well. Mr. Collins believes that Charlotte married him for love and that they are in love, but in reality she only married him for his wealth and the fact that she was somewhat desperate. Mr. Collins tells Elizabeth that he and Charlotte get along very well and are truly in love, but Elizabeth can see that is not the case.
